Every stone looks perfect under showroom lights. The question is what it looks like after two summers in a south facing Albuquerque kitchen with a family that actually cooks. Here is the honest version of the three materials we are asked about most.
Quartz
Engineered, consistent, and tough. Quartz does not need sealing, it shrugs off red chile and lemon juice, and it comes in patterns that read like marble from across the room. The one thing to know in New Mexico: quartz is resin bound, and resin does not love direct sun for hours a day. On a west facing counter under a big window we will tell you so and show you where it goes instead.
Quartzite
Natural, dramatic, and harder than granite. Quartzite takes heat and scratches better than marble while giving you real veining and depth. It is porous, so it is sealed, and it will show hard water spots if you let water sit. It is also natural, which means fissures and color shifts from slab to slab are the point, not a defect. Standard Nº 3: we show you the slab, walk the seam plan, and put it in writing.
Marble
The most beautiful and the most honest. Marble etches when acid touches it, which means lemon, wine, tomato and vinegar leave their mark. Some clients love the patina. Some will not sleep. We ask which one you are before we order, and we often put marble in the bath and the bar where it can be itself, and quartzite or quartz where the cooking happens.
What hard water does
New Mexico water is mineral heavy, and the valley south of the city is the hardest we see. Minerals leave white spots on dark polished stone and dull the shine on honed finishes. We recommend wiping standing water, choosing lighter stone around sinks, and sealing natural stone on a schedule. None of it is hard. All of it matters.
The short answer
For a kitchen that cooks every night, quartz or quartzite. For the island everyone gathers around, quartzite if you want the drama. For the bath, the bar and anywhere you want to fall in love, marble. And for all three, come see full slabs in person. The sample board lies.
